Auckland artist Julie Spray first studied painting at North Shore’s Rangitoto College, before graduating with an honours degree from Elam School of Fine Arts in 2008.
While she dabbles in a range of media and art forms, including portraiture and illustration, she is best known for her body of work depicting the coastal landscapes of Auckland. Growing up in Browns Bay, from a young age Julie found a sense of place in the coasts of the North Shore and Northland. In her work, Julie expresses her feeling of connectedness and groundedness to these places. She works in acrylic as the fast-drying medium allows her to build layers of colour to capture the richness and vivacity of New Zealand’s waters. Julie has been based in Devonport for the last five years, where she continues to explore Auckland’s best-kept secrets through paint and canvas.
